Science from the British Antarctic Survey

Through the generosity of Professor Chris Rapley and his colleagues at BAS we are able to offer a one-day seminar on the current state of climate science, from experts working in a range of disciplines, including ice core sampling (climate records going back 740,000 years, covering several ice ages) and the exotic climate modeling of ‘Daisyworld’.  This is intended for and will be appreciated by artists working in all media.

The first of these events took place in May 2006 and was a resounding success.  Some comments:

The BAS Day was superb.  Quite superb.  I was very moved by how deeply many of the scientists felt, and how they were prepared to acknowledge a feeling of intimidation from the powers-that-be, but were still doggedly carrying on saying that these are the data, these are the projections.  I find that very moving.

The day changed my heart in a way that I am still working through

Since that time, extraordinary things have happened.  Climate Change has exploded onto the front pages and political mainstream, and the IPCC has issued its 4th assessment report—after what must have been one of the most painful and drawn out editing processes ever.  What do people close to the coalface (sorry) say?  This will be privileged information.

The day will include presentations from a number of scientists, a tour of the research facilities at BAS, and opportunities for questions and discussion.
