SCIENCE DAYS
Many of the artists who attended the first Oxford Conference expressed a hunger for a basic tutorial on climate science. Professor Chris Rapley, then Director of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) responded to this request with a day long event at BAS in April 2006. The day included presentations from numerous BAS scientists, a tour of many of the BAS facilities, and discussion with Professor James Lovelock, originator of the Gaia hypothesis.
Similarly attenders of the 2006 Oxford conference were able to follow up their experience at the Ashmolean in Oxford June 07 with a day-long briefing hosted jointly by the Environmental Change Institute and TippingPoint. Senior Research Fellows and the Director of the Environmental Change Institute spoke to the invited audience of over 70 artists about climate change, from the science of prediction and modelling, to the social and political issues of carbon labelling and offsetting. The lectures were each followed by lively debate with questions for the scientists ranging from the ethics of carbon offsetting to the validation of climate models using remote sensing.
