As an Arts Development Officer I work with disadvantaged groups across Newcastle to enable them to access art and creative activity. Often this is to explore and communicate about a specific issue and environmental impact and sustainability has been the starting point of many projects. Currently the team is working with the Community Science Team and have paired two scientists with two artists to work with community groups to create responses to their ideas around ‘sustainability’. The project, ‘Growing Places’ is based in an empty shop unit on Shields Road in Byker and is exploring sustainability in a multi-facated sense, focusing particularly on what is relevant to that community and their immediate urban environment.
